Harlow is self-described as a queer non-binary youth from an immigrant family of Vietnamese background, and grew up in Taranaki. Harlow’s family is unique in that there are two other older sisters, and all three siblings identify as LGBTQI+!
Harlow was Deputy Prefect at Spotswood College & twice achieved “top scholar”. After attending an InsideOUT workshop, Harlow started the school’s PRIDE group which they nick-named “The Open Closet”. Starting with just 12 members, attendance quickly grew to around 60 under Harlow’s leadership, determination & engaging personality.
They also organised events, mental health support for students & managed queer education workshops for teachers. Last year Harlow organised Pride Week incl a Silent Sit-Out protesting harassment & discrimination of LGBTQI+ students at the school.
Harlow’s an exceptional academic and has been accepted to Auckland Uni for Global Studies & Spanish. The long-term goal is to work in International Aid. See Harlow’s personal video here.
