It was formally announced by Chairperson Gresham Bradley at the Feb 7 Rainbow Auckland Mixer that the GABA Charitable Trust has changed to become the Rainbow New Zealand Charitable Trust.
“After 18 years of activity fundraising and providing financial help to the LGBTQI+ community in New Zealand, the new name better reflects what was always our mandate, supporting people and organisations from all parts of the country. It’s been two years since GABA (Gay Auckland Business Association) changed its name to Rainbow Auckland so it made sense now for us to change too.”
The Trust retains its close relationship with Rainbow Auckland and plans to seek to appoint new Trustees from outside Auckland in the coming months to ensure national representation on the Board.
The Trust plans to broaden its fundraising strategy by holding annual reformatted fundraising events. These will include an Auction component retaining the history and involvement with business and individual supporters. Fundraising plans include approaches to Business and Corporate donors to secure sponsorships that will enable the Trust to increase the funding base it can then distribute to support its key programmes; the Tertiary Scholarships, Community Grants and Pride Grants, which will be open for applications from all around NZ.
“We are working hard on our first new fundraising event, a Gala Dinner featuring a major speaker, which we expect to hold in May”, said Gresham. “There will be a reformatted Auction component but the focus will be on a high profile speaker who we are working to confirm now. It will be an amazing evening. Stay tuned!”
